Moonstone is the gem variety of the mineral orthoclase, a potassium aluminum silicate from the feldspar group, also known as adularia. Its glow doesn't come from dye but from extremely fine alternating layers of orthoclase and albite inside the crystal, which break up the light. Experts call this shimmer adularescence, a bluish white sheen that glides across the surface as the stone moves. With a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, it is moderately hard and does best in a protective setting. It also has perfect cleavage in two directions, which is why it doesn't forgive hard knocks. Its body is typically clear to milky white, and the light seems to rest calmly on it.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled setting. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The wire is wrapped by hand around each raw stone individually, so the setting follows the natural shape of your stone. Your moonstone hangs on a fine chain whose square links interlock closely and lie smoothly against your neck. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
The Romans believed moonstone was moonlight turned solid, and it owes its name to its soft shimmer, which recalls the moon. By tradition, it stands for intuition, calm, and new beginnings. In Indian tradition, it is still considered a stone that brings good luck. As a birthstone for June, it also makes an especially personal gift.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, you should avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After contact with ocean or pool water, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Moonstone shouldn't be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner or with steam, and it should be protected from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, because the stone has perfect cleavage and is sensitive to scratches and hard knocks. This way, the blue shimmer of the stone and the surface of your necklace will stay beautiful for a long time.

Adularescence is caused by alternating layers of orthoclase and albite, on which the light is refracted.
Moonstone is the official birthstone of June and was considered solidified moonlight by the Romans.
The Romans thought moonstone was solidified moonlight. Traditionally, it stands for intuition, calm and new beginnings and, as the birthstone of June, is a personal gift.

Moonstone is the official birthstone for June and is traditionally linked to the zodiac sign Cancer. The Romans believed it was solidified moonlight. By tradition it is said to stand for intuition, calm and new beginnings, which makes it a personal gift for anyone born in June.
Genuine moonstone is practically never treated. Its sheen isn't a coating or a dye. It comes from the inner layered structure of orthoclase and albite, which refracts the light. This adularescence can't be created or enhanced afterward. What you see is the natural look of the stone.
The effect is called adularescence. Inside the stone are paper-thin alternating layers of two feldspar phases, orthoclase and albite. These layers refract and scatter the light, creating the bluish white glow that seems to glide across the surface as you move. The clearer the body of the stone, the steadier this glow appears.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I only offer 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It costs a little more than plating, but it lasts so long that you won't have to keep buying new necklaces, and you can enjoy its warm gold tone for years.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, moonstone is moderately hard and splits easily along its natural planes (perfect cleavage), which makes it sensitive to hard knocks.
