Aquamarine is a gemstone from the beryl mineral group, chemically a silicate of beryllium and aluminum with the formula Be3Al2Si6O18. It owes its blue color to traces of iron in the crystal. Emerald is a beryl too, but its green comes from chromium or vanadium. For this aquamarine necklace, the stone is cut into a faceted rectangle: many small, angled surfaces catch the light and send it back in a sparkle. A hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale makes aquamarine a stone that is well suited to everyday wear.
The aquamarine necklace is available in gold only, with the setting and chain made of 14K gold-filled. With this material, a substantial layer of 14 karat gold is permanently bonded to a base metal. It holds up to daily wear much longer than thin gold plating and keeps its warm shine. A slim bezel surrounds the stone and protects its edges. The pendant hangs from a box chain by an elongated bail, and the chain's tiny square links lie flat against your neck. In my studio in Oberhausen, I assemble each aquamarine necklace by hand and check how the stone sits. When you order, you choose between 45 cm (17.7 in) and 40 cm (15.7 in).
The name comes from the Latin aqua marina, meaning seawater. According to tradition, sailors wore aquamarine as a talisman that was meant to calm the waves and bring them home safely. Today, it is the birthstone for March. That makes an aquamarine necklace a personal gift for anyone with a birthday that month.
Your aquamarine necklace is water-resistant, because both the stone and 14K gold-filled handle water well. So you can keep it on in the shower. Over time, though, chlorine, salt water, and perfume can dull the shine of the gold and the facets. So take the necklace off before swimming, and put on your perfume before you put on the necklace.
For cleaning, all you need is lukewarm water with a little mild soap and a soft brush. Then pat the stone and chain dry. It's best to protect the aquamarine from hard knocks, because its edges can chip, and high heat isn't good for it either. Store the necklace apart from other jewelry so the hard stone doesn't scratch softer pieces.
Aquamarine and emerald are both beryls. Traces of iron give aquamarine its blue color.
The name goes back to the Latin aqua marina, meaning seawater.
In the birthstone calendar it stands for March, and sailors once saw it as a good luck charm.
Translated, its name simply means seawater. By tradition, sailors carried aquamarine as a talisman for calm waves and a safe return home, and today it is the birthstone for March.

At 45 cm (17.7 in), the aquamarine falls just below the collarbone, which looks lovely with a V-neck or an open blouse. The 40 cm (15.7 in) length keeps the aquamarine closer to your neck, so it also shows above a crew neckline and pairs nicely with a second, longer necklace. If you're unsure, measure with a piece of string around your neck.
Yes, the necklace has a real aquamarine, which is a beryl, not a glass or plastic replica. It reaches 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it much harder than glass, so it keeps its crisp facet edges for a long time.
Yes. Aquamarine is a hard gemstone and can handle water, and so can 14K gold-filled. After swimming in chlorinated water or salt water, rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it with a soft cloth.
Yes, both belong to the beryl mineral group. The difference comes from tiny traces of other elements: iron makes aquamarine blue, while chromium or vanadium make emerald green. Aquamarine is usually the clearer and less delicate of the two.
For someone with a March birthday, it's spot on, because aquamarine is the birthstone for that month. With its sea-blue stone, it will also delight anyone who loves the water. The necklace comes in the Handmade Art by Carola gift box.
