Aquamarine is a blue beryl, built from beryllium, aluminum, silicon, and oxygen. In nature, it grows in six-sided crystal columns. For these aquamarine earrings, small rectangles with many facets are cut from them. Set in a gold bezel, each stone dangles below a delicate ear hook, turns with you, and catches the light. Its clear, light blue brings to mind shallow water over sand. A Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8 means it is harder than the tiny grains of quartz in household dust, so it doesn't scratch easily.
These earrings don't come in silver: the hooks and settings are 14K gold-filled throughout. With 14K gold-filled, a substantial layer of real gold is bonded to a base metal under heat and pressure, and unlike electroplated gold, it wears off only very slowly. The stone hangs from a fine ring below a small decorative spiral on the ear hook. Clear earring backs make sure the hooks stay securely in your ears. In my studio in Oberhausen, I place two aquamarines side by side for each pair, compare their color and cut, and then make the earrings by hand. You always receive the aquamarine earrings as a pair.
Beryl, the mineral family aquamarine belongs to, was said to protect its wearer in battle and in court. It was also said to make people more likable and to sharpen the mind. Because aquamarine is the birthstone for March, aquamarine earrings make a personal gift for a birthday that month.
Your aquamarine earrings are water-resistant and can stay in while you shower. Shampoo, hairspray, and perfume leave a dull film on the facets, though, which dims the sparkle. So put the earrings in after you've done your hair, and clean the stones now and then with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
When needed, clean the ear hooks and settings in lukewarm soapy water with a soft brush, then rinse them and let them dry. It's best to skip ultrasonic baths and steam for gemstone jewelry. For storage, put the earring backs on and keep the pair in its own compartment so the hard stones don't scratch any other jewelry.
Beryl grows in six-sided crystal columns, from which the small rectangles are cut.
Traces of iron in the crystal turn aquamarine blue, and sunlight does not fade the color.
Every pair comes with two clear earring backs so the hooks do not slip out.
Beryl was once said to protect its wearer in battle and in court, to make them more likable and to sharpen the mind. On today's list of birthstones, it belongs to March.

Yes, you always get two earrings with one aquamarine each, plus two clear earring backs. I put each pair together from two stones that match well in color and cut.
Both the hooks and the bezels that hold the stones are made of 14K gold-filled. Each hook has a small decorative coil, and below it a thin jump ring holds the aquamarine so it can swing freely.
Yes, aquamarine and 14K gold-filled are water-resistant. Shampoo and hairspray can make the facets look dull, though, so clean the stones now and then with a soft, damp cloth.
Aquamarines range from a very pale blue to a strong blue, often with a hint of green. The stones in these earrings show a clear, light blue. Sunlight does not fade the blue of this stone.
From Latin: aqua means water, and marina means belonging to the sea. So the name describes the stone's color, which recalls clear seawater. According to tradition, sailors saw it as a talisman for calm seas.
