The Stone: Hiddenite as a Raw Crystal

This hiddenite necklace carries a genuine hiddenite, the green variety of the mineral spodumene. The slender crystal glows in a fresh apple green and lets plenty of light through. Typical of spodumene are the fine lengthwise grooves and the etch marks that nature left on its faces after it grew. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, hiddenite is hard but cleaves easily, so it needs some protection from hard knocks. Its name goes back to the American mineralogist William Earl Hidden.

Material and Craftsmanship

I wrap every crystal by hand, one at a time, using 14K gold-filled wire. A twisted frame holds the stone securely, and a curved line runs across it. 14K gold-filled is a thick, firmly bonded layer of gold that keeps its warm tone for years, unlike wafer-thin gold plating. You can add a fine Venetian chain in 14K gold-filled in 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in), or take the pendant on its own.

Caring for Your Hiddenite Necklace

The pendant and chain are water-resistant. To keep the shine for a long time, take the necklace off before swimming in salt water or chlorinated water, and keep perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners away from it. Don't leave the stone in bright sunlight for hours, because strong light can make the color of spodumene paler over time. Ultrasonic cleaners and hard knocks are not good for it, so it's best to store the necklace dry and apart from your other jewelry.
