Labradorite is a plagioclase from the feldspar group, a mixed crystal of albite and anorthite with an anorthite content of 50 to 70 percent. Its body is gray to grayish black, but as soon as you turn it, a blue-green fire sweeps across the domed surface. This play of color is called labradorescence. It appears when light is reflected by extremely thin, submicroscopic layers inside the crystal (exsolution lamellae) and the reflections overlap. So the effect comes from structure, not from any coloring. With a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, the stone is moderately hard and likes gentle handling in everyday life.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and warm 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The stone itself is genuine labradorite, cut into a teardrop, polished, and treated. Each teardrop is selected individually and strung by hand, so it rests calmly and centered at your collarbone. It hangs on a fine chain, and you choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
The stone owes its name to the Labrador Peninsula in northeastern Canada, where it was first described in 1770. In the far north, its shifting glow has long been compared to the northern lights. By tradition, labradorite stands for intuition, protection, and inner clarity, for a calm look within. That makes it a quiet companion for people who want to trust their own decisions.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, you should avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After swimming in the ocean or a pool, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Labradorite doesn't belong in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner, and it doesn't like high heat or sudden changes in temperature. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, because feldspar is softer than quartz and scratches easily. This way, the play of color in the stone and the polish of its surface will stay beautiful for a long time.

Labradorescence is caused by interference of light on fine segregation lamellae in the crystal, not by coloring.

The Lumière Factor is my transparent assessment of each stone's play of light. Labradorite is all about its flash of color, not clarity. That's why I leave out transparency and rate it in 3 categories of 0 to 25 points each.

Labradorite is named after the Labrador Peninsula in Canada, where it was first described in 1770. Because of its shifting glow, people in northern countries have long associated it with the northern lights. By tradition it is said to stand for intuition, protection and inner clarity.
The stone is genuine, naturally grown labradorite, not glass and not an imitation. It isn't a raw stone, though: the teardrop has been cut, polished and treated, and I'm open about that. The play of color itself can't be created artificially, because it comes from the inner structure of the crystal.
The effect is called labradorescence. Inside the crystal there are submicroscopic layers where light is reflected and overlaps. Depending on the angle, part of the light cancels out and another part gets stronger, leaving blue, green or gold visible. It is a structural effect, not a dye.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I only offer 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It costs a little more than plating, but it lasts so long that you won't have to keep buying new necklaces, and you can enjoy its warm gold tone for years.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, labradorite is moderately hard and scratches easily.
