Rock crystal is the colorless variety of the mineral quartz, chemically pure silicon dioxide with the formula SiO2. It crystallizes in the trigonal system and grows in hydrothermal clefts and geodes into six-sided prisms with pyramid-shaped tips. With a Mohs hardness of 7, it is one of the harder gemstones. It has no cleavage and breaks with a shell-like fracture, just like glass. The stone on this necklace is genuine rock crystal, cut and polished into a softly rounded teardrop. It has been treated, as is common for gemstones in the trade, and I disclose this treatment openly. It typically has a glassy luster that creates a clear sparkle even in low light.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled setting. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. Each teardrop is set by hand, one at a time, so it stays free to move and keeps turning into the light as you wear it. The pendant hangs on a fine chain with closely interlocking square links. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
The ancient Greeks called the stone krystallos and believed it was ice frozen so deeply that it could never melt again. Old legends of mountain peoples tell of palaces made of pure crystal, and in many cultures clear quartz was a symbol of purity. By tradition, rock crystal stands for clarity, an alert mind, and an unclouded view of things. Because it is colorless, it suits any occasion and goes with any other piece of jewelry.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, you should avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After contact with ocean or pool water, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Because the stone is treated, it doesn't belong in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner and should be protected from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, because although rock crystal resists scratches, it can chip from a hard knock. This way, the clarity of the stone and the surface of your necklace will stay beautiful for a long time.

The stone is genuine rock crystal, meaning naturally grown quartz, not glass. It has been cut, polished and treated. Treatments are common for gemstones on the market and must be disclosed, which is why I state this openly here.
Rock crystal is silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7, while glass is around 5.5. That makes the stone much more scratch-resistant than glass, and it breaks with curved, shell-like fractures and a glassy luster. Fine natural inclusions are a sign that it's genuine, not a flaw.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I only offer 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It costs a little more than plating, but it lasts so long that you won't have to keep buying new necklaces, and you can enjoy its warm gold tone for years.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic or steam cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry: with a Mohs hardness of 7, rock crystal resists scratches, but a hard knock can chip it.
Both lengths are classics. 40 cm (15.7 in) sits higher on the neck and highlights the collarbone, while 45 cm (17.7 in) falls softly onto the neckline and gives the teardrop more room. If you'd like to layer the necklace with other necklaces, 45 cm is the more flexible choice.

Origin of the stones
Every stone has made a journey, and I want that journey to be fair and transparent.

The rock crystal in this necklace typically comes from the deposits of Minas Gerais in Brazil, before each stone is set by hand in my studio.
