Amethyst is the violet variety of the mineral quartz and is made of silicon dioxide. Its color doesn't come from dye but from traces of iron in the crystal lattice, which turn into color centers over millions of years under the natural radiation of the surrounding rock. Without this slow process deep in the earth, the crystal would stay colorless. Its shades range from soft lilac to deep purple, depending on the iron content and the radiation dose. With a Mohs hardness of 7, it is one of the harder minerals. Its name goes back to the ancient Greek word amethystos, which means "not intoxicated."
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled setting. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is only a wafer-thin surface layer, wears off over time, and quickly fades, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The raw stone measures about 8 to 10 mm and is wrapped in wire by hand, one stone at a time, so the setting follows its natural shape. The pendant hangs on a fine chain with square links. You choose the chain length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
In antiquity, the stone was a symbol of temperance. Greeks and Romans had drinking cups made from it because they linked the stone with a clear head. Later, the church made it the stone of bishops, and it is still part of their insignia today. By tradition, it stands for calm and clarity. As the birthstone for February, it also makes an especially personal gift.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, you should avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After swimming in the ocean or a pool, rinse your necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Amethyst doesn't belong in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner and should be protected from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Don't leave it in strong, direct sun for long periods, because intense sunlight can fade the violet over time. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, and its color and surface will stay beautiful for a long time.

Yes. The stone in this necklace is real amethyst, the purple variety of the mineral quartz. It is not heated, not colored and not subsequently irradiated. Its color was created over millions of years in the earth by traces of iron in the crystal lattice and the natural radiation of the surrounding rock.
Very long and intense sunlight can weaken the violet over time because the color is based on sensitive color centers in the crystal. This doesn't happen with normal wear. Just don't leave your necklace in direct sunlight, keep it dark and dry.
14K gold filled is the higher quality choice, and that's exactly why I only offer 14K gold filled. With gold-plated jewelry there is only a very thin layer of gold, which wears off over time and becomes pale more quickly. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a significantly thicker, tightly bound gold layer: not quite as cheap as gold plating, but so durable that you don't have to constantly buy new chains and can enjoy your warm gold tone for years to come.
Pendant and chain are water-resistant. However, avoid long-term contact with perfume, creams and aggressive cleaners, avoid ultrasonic baths and avoid strong heat and sudden temperature changes. Store the chain dry and individually, as the natural edges of a raw stone can chip if hit hard.
