Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine, a magnesium iron silicate from the solid solution series between forsterite and fayalite. Its color doesn't come from dye but from iron that sits firmly in the crystal lattice. That's why the stone only comes in shades of green, from light apple green to deep olive green. This teardrop is a genuine, naturally grown peridot, and it has been treated, which I'm telling you openly here. For peridot, oiling and filling fine fractures with wax or resin to improve clarity are standard practice in the trade. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, the stone is moderately hard, and its luster is glassy to slightly oily.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled chain. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The teardrop needs no metal setting. It is drilled crosswise, the fine chain runs straight through the stone, and so the pendant lies calmly and flat against your skin. I thread each necklace by hand, one at a time. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
Peridot was mined on the island of Zabargad in the Red Sea thousands of years ago and revered in ancient Egypt as the stone of the sun. Because its green resembles that of emerald, the two stones were confused for centuries. By tradition, peridot stands for a zest for life, clarity, and a fresh start. As a birthstone for August, it makes a very personal gift.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and made for everyday wear. Still, avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After swimming in the ocean or a pool, it's best to give the necklace a quick rinse with clean water and dry it carefully.
Because the stone is treated, it belongs in neither an ultrasonic cleaner nor a steam cleaner, and you should avoid high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Store the necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, the stone is sensitive to scratches and hard knocks. This way, the polished surface of your teardrop will stay beautiful for a long time.

Peridot is the official birthstone for August and is traditionally linked to the zodiac sign Leo. In ancient Egypt it was already known as the gem of the sun. By tradition it is said to stand for zest for life, clarity and new beginnings, which makes this necklace a personal gift for anyone born in August.
The stone is genuine, naturally grown peridot, and it has been treated. I'm telling you this openly on purpose instead of keeping quiet about it. For peridot, oiling and filling fine fissures with wax or resin are common practice to improve clarity. It is not a man-made stone, glass or an imitation.
The teardrop has no metal setting. It is drilled through from side to side, and the fine chain runs straight through the stone. This keeps the pendant lying flat on your skin and neatly centered, and the natural pattern of the stone is visible all around.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I only offer 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It costs a little more than plating, but it lasts so long that you can enjoy its warm gold tone for years.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, peridot is only moderately hard and is sensitive to hard knocks.
