Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine, a magnesium iron silicate from the solid solution series between forsterite and fayalite. Its green is idiochromatic: it comes from iron that is firmly part of the crystal lattice, which makes it the stone's own natural color. The peridot on this necklace is genuine and has been treated. That does not change its green color. For this piece, it was cut into a slim cylinder with beveled ends, drilled lengthwise, and threaded directly onto the chain without a setting. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, it is moderately hard. An old name for it is chrysolite.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and warm 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Simple gold plating is only a wafer-thin coat that wears off over time and fades quickly. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, keeps its warm tone for years. Each cylinder is picked out individually and threaded by hand in my studio, so it rests at the lowest point of the chain. It hangs on a fine box chain whose square links interlock closely. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
Peridot was mined on the island of Zabargad in the Red Sea thousands of years ago, and in ancient Egypt it was called the gem of the sun. For a long time, it was mistaken for emerald, and some famous supposed emeralds later turned out to be peridots. By tradition, it stands for a zest for life, clarity, and renewal. As the birthstone for August, it is still a popular gift today.
The stone and box chain are water-resistant and made for everyday wear. Still, you should avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After a swim in the ocean or a pool, it's best to give the necklace a quick rinse with clean water and dry it carefully.
Because the stone has been treated, it doesn't belong in an ultrasonic cleaner or a steam cleaner. Keep it away from high heat and sudden changes in temperature, and store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry. That way, the cut, the bright green, and the surface of the necklace stay beautiful for a long time.

Peridot is the official birthstone for August and is traditionally linked to the zodiac sign Leo. In ancient Egypt it was called the gem of the sun. By tradition it is said to stand for zest for life, clarity and renewal, and that's exactly what makes it a personal gift for anyone with an August birthday.
The stone is genuine peridot from a natural deposit, and yes, it has been treated. I'm telling you this openly. With peridot, a treatment doesn't change the color: the color is idiochromatic, comes from iron in the crystal lattice and can't be changed by heating, irradiation or dyeing. The green you see is the natural color of the stone.
A box chain is made of square links that fit tightly together. This lets it lie flat against your neck, barely twist while you wear it and keep the stone neatly centered. Its clean, geometric line goes well with the calm cylinder shape of the peridot.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, which is why I only offer 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It costs a little more than plating, but it lasts so long that you won't have to keep buying new necklaces, and you can enjoy its warm gold tone for years.
The stone and box chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners or steam, and keep the necklace away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Store it dry and separate from other jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, peridot is moderately hard and sensitive to hard knocks.

Origin of the stones
Every stone has a journey and I want that journey to be fair and transparent.
Origin · Peridot
The peridot in this necklace typically comes from the deposits of Kohistan in Pakistan, before each stone is hand-strung in my studio.
