Citrine is the yellow to orange gem variety of the mineral quartz, made of silicon dioxide, which places it in the oxide class. Its warm color comes from iron that is finely embedded in the crystal lattice. That's why the stone only comes in shades of yellow and orange, from light lemon yellow to a deep, reddish orange known as the Madeira shade. With a Mohs hardness of 7, citrine is one of the hard gemstones and well suited to everyday wear. Its crystal system is trigonal, and its density is about 2.65 grams per cubic centimeter. Its name goes back to the French word citron, meaning lemon.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled setting. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The wire is wrapped by hand around each raw stone individually, so the setting follows the natural shape of your stone. The stone measures about 8 to 10 mm. The pendant hangs on a fine chain with square links that lies smoothly against your neck. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
Citrine has carried its current name since the 16th century; for a long time, the yellow quartz was confused with topaz. By tradition, it is known as the merchant's stone and the stone of abundance, and it stands for a zest for life, confidence, and success. Since 1952, American jewelers have listed it alongside topaz as a birthstone for November. That makes it a very personal gift.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, you should avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After contact with ocean or pool water, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Citrine shouldn't be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner or with steam, and it should be protected from high heat and long periods of direct sunlight, because yellow quartz can fade over time. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry. This way, the warm glow of the stone and the surface of your necklace will stay beautiful for a long time.

Along with topaz, citrine is the official birthstone for November and is traditionally linked to the zodiac signs Scorpio and Sagittarius. It was added in 1952, when American jewelers updated the list of birthstones. By tradition it is known as the merchant's stone and is said to stand for abundance, zest for life and confidence, which makes it a personal gift for anyone born in November.
Mineralogically, citrine is quartz, meaning silicon dioxide with a Mohs hardness of 7. Naturally yellow citrine is fairly rare, and many of the stones sold are heated amethyst or smoky quartz with the same chemical makeup. This kind of heating is permanently stable and doesn't change with everyday wear. Every stone in my studio is a genuine raw quartz stone, picked by hand, neither cut nor polished.
45 cm (17.7 in) is the classic length: it falls softly onto the neckline and keeps the pendant nicely visible. 40 cm (15.7 in) sits higher on the neck and highlights the collarbone, which looks especially nice with open necklines. The chain has square links, so it lies flat against your neck, barely twists while you wear it and keeps the pendant neatly centered.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I only offer 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. The material is comfortable to wear and lasts so long that you won't have to keep buying new necklaces.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and protect the stone from high heat and long, direct sunlight, because yellow quartz can fade over time. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry: citrine has a Mohs hardness of 7 and is still sensitive to hard knocks.
