A Sun Charm to Clip On
Charms are small pendants that clip on: you attach them to a bracelet or necklace and can swap them whenever you like. This sun charm shows a sun with a face: closed eyes, a gentle smile and pointed rays all around. It measures about 9 x 11 mm and is made entirely of metal, either 925 sterling silver or 14K gold-filled. Sterling silver contains 92.5 percent pure silver; the rest is usually copper, which makes the soft precious metal stronger. Since there is no stone in it, the charm is water-resistant.
Material and Craftsmanship
For the gold version I use 14K gold-filled, which means a sturdy core beneath a thick layer of real gold. This layer lasts much longer than simple gold plating, and the warm color stays. A small jump ring connects the sun to a spring ring clasp made of the same metal. Open the spring ring with your thumbnail, hook it onto the bracelet or necklace and let it snap shut, and the sun charm is securely attached. That way the sun can move between your pieces whenever you feel like it. I assemble every charm by hand in my studio in Oberhausen and check the spring ring before it goes out to you.

Charms collect memories: each one stands for a person, a place or a moment. Traditionally, the sun stands for light, warmth and hope. As the first charm on a new bracelet or as a small gift, it makes a bright beginning.
Caring for Your Sun Charm
Water won't harm the sun charm, so you can leave it on while washing your hands, in the shower and at the pool. After chlorine or salt water, give it a quick rinse with clear water. Check now and then that the spring ring still closes properly, especially if the charm hangs on a bracelet you wear a lot. If it no longer closes properly, take the charm off so the sun doesn't get lost.
If the silver darkens over time, polish it with a silver polishing cloth. The recessed lines in the face can stay a little darker, which brings out the relief. Clean gold charms with mild soapy water. Store the charm in a small pouch so it doesn't get scratched.

The charm has a small spring ring clasp. Push the little lever back with your fingernail, slide the ring through a link of your bracelet or necklace and let go of the lever. The clasp then springs shut on its own and holds the sun securely.
The spring ring clasp fits necklaces and bracelets with open links, such as a cable chain like the one on the sun bracelet. On a tightly made box chain, it's best to hang the charm from the ring at the clasp.
The sun measures about 9 x 11 mm (0.35 x 0.43 in), plus the spring ring clasp. That makes the charm small enough for a delicate bracelet and big enough that you can clearly see its face.
