Labradorite is a plagioclase from the feldspar group: a sodium calcium aluminum silicate in the solid solution series between albite and anorthite, with an anorthite content of 50 to 70 percent. Its colors do not come from pigments but from light. At submicroscopic exsolution lamellae inside the crystal, light is refracted and overlaps, appearing as blue, green, and sometimes gold. This play of color is called labradorescence, and it moves as soon as you move the stone. With a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, labradorite is moderately hard and does best in a protective setting.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled setting. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years and stays skin-friendly. The wire is wrapped by hand around each raw stone individually, so the setting follows the natural shape of your stone. The pendant hangs on a fine-link chain, and you choose its length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
The stone was discovered in 1770 on the coast of the Labrador Peninsula in Canada, which gave it its name. According to an Inuit tale, it holds northern lights that stayed trapped in the rock when a warrior set the other lights free. That's why, by tradition, labradorite stands for protection, intuition, and inner clarity: a companion in times of change.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After contact with seawater or pool water, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Labradorite should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner or with steam, and it should be protected from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, because the stone has distinct cleavage and is sensitive to hard knocks. That way, the play of color in the stone and the surface of your necklace stay beautiful for a long time.
Labradorite is a plagioclase from the mixed series albite to anorthite with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5.
Labradorescence arises from interference at submicroscopically fine separation lamellae, not from pigments.
The stone was discovered on Canada's Labrador Peninsula in 1770 and has borne her name ever since.
Labradorite was discovered on Canada's Labrador Peninsula and is traditionally considered the stone of the Northern Lights. In this tradition it stands for protection, intuition and inner clarity and accompanies you through times of change.

The Lumière Factor is my transparent assessment of each stone's play of light. Labradorite is all about its flash of color, not clarity. That's why I leave out transparency and rate it in 3 categories of 0 to 25 points each.

The blue-green glow is called labradorescence. It doesn't come from pigments but from light interfering at submicroscopic layers inside the crystal. That's why the play of color shifts as soon as you move the stone, and every labradorite shows its own pattern.
The labradorite on this necklace is an untreated raw stone. It has not been heated, irradiated or dyed. Its sheen comes from the inner structure of the mineral and can't be created by any treatment. What you see is the natural appearance of the stone.
40 cm (15.7 in) sits higher on the neck and highlights the collarbone. 45 cm (17.7 in) is the classic length and falls softly onto the neckline. If you'd like to layer several necklaces, 40 cm is the better choice. You choose the length right when you order.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I work with it exclusively. With gold plating, just a wafer-thin layer of gold sits on top of the base metal, and it wears off and fades over time. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It keeps its warm tone for years, hardly tarnishes and is comfortable to wear.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, labradorite is moderately hard and can split along its natural cleavage planes.

Origin of the stones
Every stone has a journey and I want that journey to be fair and transparent.
Origin · Labradorite
The labradorite in this necklace typically comes from the deposits near Antsirabé in Madagascar, before each raw stone is set by hand in my studio.
