The Synthetic Opal Heart
The pendant on this heart necklace is a small 10 x 10 mm heart made of synthetic opal. Synthetic means the stone was made by people and is not a natural stone. When you move the heart, little colorful dots flash up. A stone with this kind of play of color is called opalescent. You can choose between a white heart with pastel sparks and a lilac heart in a soft lavender shade. The chain runs straight through a fine hole drilled in the heart, so it sits calmly in the center. The sparks glow brightest under a lamp or in sunlight.
Material and Craftsmanship
The necklace comes in 925 sterling silver and in 14K gold-filled. With 14K gold-filled, a thick layer of real gold is firmly bonded to a base metal under pressure and heat, much thicker than simple gold plating. That's why the heart necklace keeps its warm tone even with daily wear. Sterling silver is 92.5 percent pure silver. The chain is a box chain with small square links that lie flat against your neck. I thread each heart by hand in my studio in Oberhausen. When you order, you choose 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in). If you're unsure, use a piece of string to measure where you'd like the necklace to sit.
Meaning of the Heart
For centuries, the heart has been a symbol of love and friendship. Giving someone a heart necklace says, without words: you matter to me. Many people also wear a heart for themselves, as a small reminder of the people they love. Opal is also considered the birthstone for October.
Caring for Your Heart Necklace
The chain itself is water-resistant, so showering and washing your hands won't hurt it. It's best to protect the pendant from perfume, lotions, chlorine, and salt water, because over time they can make its surface dull. If salt water does get on it, rinse the necklace briefly with clean water and pat it dry.
Synthetic opal is softer than quartz and doesn't like hard knocks. So store the necklace apart from other jewelry, ideally in the gift box it arrives in. The bathroom isn't a good place for it, because humid air makes silver tarnish faster. Polish sterling silver with a soft cloth to make it bright again. That way, your heart will shine for a long time.

The heart measures 10 x 10 mm (0.39 x 0.39 in). That makes it small enough for every day and big enough that you can clearly see it sparkle.
