Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar, a framework silicate from the solid solution series between albite and anorthite, with an anorthite content of 50 to 70 percent. Its color does not come from a pigment but from light. Inside the stone, light is refracted and reflected at submicroscopic exsolution lamellae, and that is exactly what creates its shimmer of blue, green, and gold. In mineralogy, this effect is called labradorescence. With a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, the stone is moderately hard and has perfect cleavage, which is why it needs a steady hand and a clean cut.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and warm 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The pendant is a faceted cylinder of about 8 to 10 mm (0.3 to 0.4 in), cleanly drilled and threaded onto the chain by hand in my studio. That way, the stone sits calmly in the center and turns slightly as you move, so the play of color flashes up again and again. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
The stone is named after the Labrador Peninsula in Canada, where it was found on the coast and described in 1770. In Finland, an especially colorful variety is still sold as spectrolite today. By tradition, labradorite is considered a stone of protection and intuition, and its play of color is often compared to the northern lights. This meaning comes from tradition and storytelling and is not a promise.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After contact with seawater or pool water, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Because the stone has been treated, it doesn't belong in an ultrasonic cleaner or a steam bath, and it should be protected from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, because labradorite is sensitive to scratches and hard knocks. That way, the stone's play of color stays clear and its surface beautiful for a long time.
Labradorite is a plagioclase feldspar from the mixed series albite to anorthite with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5.
The iridescence is caused by fine segregation lamellae in the stone, not by dye. Experts call it labradorescence.
The stone is genuine labradorite and has been treated. I'm disclosing this so you know what you're wearing.

The Lumière Factor is my transparent assessment of each stone's play of light. Labradorite is all about its flash of color, not clarity. That's why I leave out transparency and rate it in 3 categories of 0 to 25 points each.

Labradorescence is the technical term for the shimmer of labradorite. Inside the stone are submicroscopic layers of feldspar with slightly different compositions. Incoming light is refracted and reflected at these layers, creating the colors blue, green and gold. So it is a light effect, not a dye, and it shows most strongly when you move the stone.
The stone is genuine, natural labradorite, and it has been treated. Treatments are common for gemstones and usually improve luster, color or stability. What matters to me is that this is stated openly instead of quietly taken for granted. So you're not buying a man-made stone or an imitation here, but genuine labradorite with a disclosed treatment.
Both lengths are classics. 40 cm (15.7 in) sits higher on the neck and highlights the collarbone, while 45 cm (17.7 in) falls softly onto the neckline and pairs well with a second necklace. If you're not sure, measure a necklace you like to wear and compare. You can choose the length right when you order.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I only offer 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It costs a little more than plating, but it lasts so long that you won't have to keep buying new necklaces, and you can enjoy its warm gold tone for years.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes, because the stone is treated. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry: with a Mohs hardness of 6 to 6.5, labradorite is moderately hard and sensitive to hard knocks.

Origin of the stones
Every stone has a journey and I want that journey to be fair and transparent.
Origin · Labradorite
The labradorite in this necklace typically comes from deposits in Madagascar before each cylinder is hand-strung onto the necklace in my studio.
