With its own spring ring, this opal pendant is a charm: you hook it onto a bracelet or necklace and swap it whenever you like. The heart is cut from opal, a mineraloid made of hydrated silicon dioxide. Because its tiny silica gel spheres diffract light, it shows a lively play of color in green, blue, and violet. The opal is polished smooth and set in a gold bezel that protects its edge. Its Mohs hardness is 5.5 to 6.5, so it shouldn't take any hard knocks.
The setting, ring, and spring ring are made of 14K gold-filled, and the opal pendant is available in gold only. With 14K gold-filled, the gold layer is so substantial that your charm stays golden for a long time, even if you switch it around often. To attach the charm, push back the lever on the spring ring with your fingernail, guide the ring around a link, and release the lever. On a fine box chain, simply place the ring around the whole chain, and the heart will hang at the front, in the center. I assemble each opal charm by hand in my studio in Oberhausen and check that the spring ring snaps shut cleanly.
Opal's reputation as an unlucky stone goes back to a novel from the 19th century. For long stretches of history, it was actually considered a lucky stone, because it carries all colors within it. And because opal is the birthstone for October, an opal pendant becomes a small symbol of good luck for everyone born in October.
The spring ring and setting can handle water, but the opal should stay as dry as possible. If your opal pendant hangs on a bracelet, take it off before you wash your hands with soap, do the dishes, or shower. The sauna and direct sun aren't good for it either, because high heat can draw water out of it.
To clean it, use a soft, slightly damp cloth and then pat the heart dry. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and cleaning products are off-limits. Check now and then that the spring ring still snaps shut firmly, so your heart stays securely in place. A small pouch, away from harder jewelry, is ideal for storage.
Opal's reputation as an unlucky stone comes from an 1829 novel. Before that, opal was considered a lucky stone.
Pliny the Elder wrote that opal unites the colors of many gemstones.
Opal is the birthstone for people born in October.

The Lumière Factor is my transparent assessment of each stone's play of light. This opal isn't meant to be see-through. Its charm lies in its play of color. That's why I leave out transparency and rate it in 3 categories of 0 to 25 points each.

Push back the little lever on the spring ring clasp, put the ring around a link of your bracelet or around your chain and let go. The spring ring clasp snaps shut on its own. To take it off, just do the same thing.
On bracelets and necklaces with open links, you hook it on directly. With a fine box chain like the ones on my necklaces, put the spring ring clasp around the whole chain, and the heart will glide to the center. And of course it goes with the other charms in my collection.
No, that's a myth. It goes back to Walter Scott's 1829 novel Anne of Geierstein. For most of history, opal was considered a lucky stone because it shows all the colors of the rainbow.
Yes, you can freely combine the opal heart with other charms, such as the aquamarine, the sun or the oval cultured freshwater pearl. That way you build a bracelet piece by piece that tells your story.
The spring ring clasp and the setting in 14K gold-filled are water-resistant, but the opal itself should stay dry. So it's best to take the charm off before showering, swimming or washing your hands, and if it does get wet, pat it dry with a soft cloth.
