A charm is a small pendant that you hook on. It holds onto a bracelet or necklace and can be taken off again at any time. This charm pendant carries a cultured freshwater pearl, an organic gem made of nacre. Inside the mussel, nacre forms from aragonite, a crystal form of calcium carbonate, and the protein conchiolin, which build up layer by layer. These layers create the pearl's soft luster. Its small oval shape grew that way, so no two charms are alike. At 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, nacre is fairly soft and should be protected from scratches.
You decide between 925 sterling silver and 14K gold-filled. With 14K gold-filled, the gold layer is many times thicker than gold plating and permanently bonded to the core metal, so the charm keeps its warm tone for years. A fine headpin holds the pearl, and I wrap its top end by hand into a loop. Above it sits a small spring ring made of the same metal, either 925 sterling silver or 14K gold-filled. Pull back the lever, hook the ring into a link of your bracelet or necklace, and let go. That way, your charm pendant travels with you from piece to piece.
Charms tell stories. Each one is a reminder of a person, a place, or a special moment. By tradition, the pearl is a symbol of purity and connection, and it is a birthstone for June. It works well as the start of a new charm bracelet or as a small gift that means something.
The spring ring and loop are water-resistant, but you need to be a little careful with the pearl. Soap, perfume, chlorine, and salt water can attack its nacre and make it dull. So take the charm off before you shower, swim, or work out, especially when it hangs on a bracelet that gets wet when you wash your hands.
Gently wipe the pearl with a damp cloth after wearing it and let it dry before you hook the charm back on. An ultrasonic bath or steam would damage the nacre, and so would strong heat. Store the charm dry and on its own, because among harder pieces of jewelry the pearl easily gets scratched and loses its luster.
A cultured freshwater pearl of grown nacre, formed layer by layer inside the mussel.
The spring ring opens in one easy move and hooks onto a bracelet or necklace.
In pearl farming, a single freshwater mussel often grows more than twenty pearls at the same time.
Charms tell stories, because each one recalls a person, a place or a special moment. By tradition, the pearl is a symbol of purity and connection, and it is one of the birthstones for June.

The charm has a small spring ring clasp. To attach it, push the little lever back with your fingernail, slide the open ring through a link of the chain and let go of the lever. The ring closes on its own. That way you can move the cultured freshwater pearl to another chain whenever you like.
The charm fits necklaces and bracelets whose links leave enough room for the spring ring clasp, for example the cable chain of my oval cultured pearl bracelet. On very tightly made chains, you can also hang the charm from the ring at the clasp.
Yes, and you can see it: its oval shape, the fine irregularities on its surface and a luster that changes with the light all show that it grew inside a mussel as a cultured freshwater pearl.
Yes, that's exactly what charms are made for. On a bracelet, you can combine the cultured freshwater pearl with other charms and build your own bracelet, one piece at a time. As a June birthstone, the pearl is a lovely start for a bracelet with meaning.
Yes, the spring ring clasp and the bail are water-resistant, because both are made of 925 sterling silver or 14K gold-filled. The cultured freshwater pearl needs more care, since chlorine, salt water, soap and perfume wear down the nacre. So take the charm off before showering, swimming and working out, and wipe the pearl clean with a soft cloth afterward.
