The Synthetic Opal Bat
This bat necklace carries a bat with outstretched wings, 9 x 15 mm in size. It is made of synthetic opal, a manufactured stone and not natural opal. The white bat sparkles in light rainbow colors, while the black one shows red and orange sparks on a dark base. The chain runs through a hole drilled in the upper edge, so the bat spreads its wings horizontally, as if it were just taking off. Its 15 mm wingspan is easy to see, yet the pendant stays light and dainty. The black version is available only for the bat.
Material and Craftsmanship
The bat hangs on 925 sterling silver or 14K gold-filled. Sterling silver is a proven blend of 92.5 percent silver and other metals, usually copper. With 14K gold-filled, real gold is permanently bonded to a base metal in a thick layer, so the color stays beautiful even with daily wear, while mere gold plating fades faster. The box chain is made of fine square links and runs smoothly through the pendant. I thread each bat necklace by hand in my studio in Oberhausen and check both wings. You choose 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in). Silver goes especially well with the black bat, and both colors suit the white one.
Meaning of the Bat
In some Asian languages, the word for bat sounds like the word for luck, so there the bat is a symbol of good fortune. Here, it is a classic part of Halloween. By the way, bats are the only mammals that can truly fly. About 25 bat species live in Germany, and all of them are strictly protected.
Caring for Your Bat Necklace
The necklace handles water and can stay on in the shower. However, perfume, lotions, chlorine, and salt water shouldn't get on the bat, because over time they make the synthetic opal lose its shine. So put the necklace on only after your fragrance has dried, and take it off before swimming.
Synthetic opal doesn't have the hardness of quartz, and the wing tips are delicate. So take the necklace off for sports and keep it in its box. Clean silver with a polishing cloth. If you hang the necklace on a jewelry tree, it won't get tangled with other necklaces. That way, your bat will fly through the night with you for many years.

The white bat looks bright and playful, with sparks in pastel colors. The black one is dark and mysterious, with red sparks in the stone, ideal for Halloween and for anyone who likes a darker look.
It measures 9 x 15 mm (0.35 x 0.59 in), so it's much wider across the wings than it is tall. On the chain it stands out without looking heavy.
