The Synthetic Opal Crescent Moon
This crescent moon necklace carries a slender crescent of 8 x 11 mm. The pendant is a synthetic opal, meaning a stone made by people, not something found in nature. When light falls on the crescent, tiny colorful dots dance across its surface, like a little night sky. White looks clear and bright, and lilac has a cool lavender tone. The chain runs through a fine hole drilled in the upper tip, so the crescent hangs freely and moves with you. The slim shape suits delicate necklines and is easy to layer with other necklaces.
Material and Craftsmanship
The fine box chain comes in 925 sterling silver and in 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled means that real gold is permanently applied to a base metal in a thick layer and doesn't wear off as quickly as thin gold plating. Sterling silver is 92.5 percent pure silver, and the rest is usually copper. The box chain lies flat against your neck and glides smoothly through the moon. In my studio in Oberhausen, I assemble each crescent moon necklace by hand and check the drill hole and the edges. You can get it in 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).

The moon goes through all its phases in about 29.5 days. That's why, in many cultures, the crescent stands for change and new beginnings. A moon necklace reminds you that every phase has its time. Opal is also considered the birthstone for October.
Caring for Your Crescent Moon Necklace
Water doesn't bother the necklace, so you can wear it in the shower. Chemicals are another story: perfume, sunscreen, and chlorine make synthetic opal look duller over time. So spray on your fragrance before you put on the necklace, and take it off before swimming. After a day at the beach, a quick rinse with tap water is enough.
To store the necklace, place it in its box so the moon doesn't rub against other jewelry. Silver that has darkened turns bright again with a soft polishing cloth. It's better to take the necklace off for sports so it doesn't get caught on anything. Then your crescent moon will stay with you for a long time and sparkle like it did on the first day.

No, the crescent is a synthetic opal. It is manufactured, not mined from the earth. I'd rather tell you right away, and its play of color is still beautifully lively.
It is 8 mm (0.31 in) wide and 11 mm (0.43 in) tall. That makes it delicate enough for every day, yet on the chain it's still clearly recognizable as a moon.
White looks like moonlight and goes with everything. Lilac is a soft lavender shade that looks especially cool and modern with silver.
At 45 cm (17.7 in), the classic length, the moon sits a little below the collarbone. The 40 cm (15.7 in) version sits closer to the neck, so the moon stays visible even above a crew neckline.
