The Oval Cultured Freshwater Pearl: Nacre, Grown Over Time
A cultured freshwater pearl is an organic gem that grows inside a mussel. It is made of nacre: fine platelets of the mineral aragonite, a crystal form of calcium carbonate, and the protein conchiolin, which binds these platelets together layer by layer. The layers refract light and give the pearl its soft luster. Cultured Freshwater pearls rarely grow perfectly round. For this cultured pearl necklace, I choose oval pearls whose shape formed inside the mussel. That's why no two pearls are alike. On the Mohs hardness scale, nacre reaches only 2.5 to 4.5, which makes it softer than most gemstones.
Material and Craftsmanship
There are two metals to choose from: 925 sterling silver and 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled is a thick, firmly bonded layer of real gold over a base metal. Unlike wafer-thin gold plating, it doesn't wear off as quickly and keeps its warm gold tone for many years. The pearl sits on a fine headpin, and I wrap its top end by hand into a small loop. It hangs from a box chain by a slim bail. The chain's square links interlock closely, so it lies smoothly against your neck and hardly twists. When you order, you choose the length of your pearl necklace: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
Meaning of the Pearl
In the first century, the Roman scholar Pliny the Elder described pearls as children of the dew, formed from drops that fall into open shells. To this day, pearls symbolize purity, calm, and connection. The pearl is a birthstone for June. That makes a pearl necklace a personal gift, for a birthday as well as for a pearl wedding anniversary after thirty years of marriage.
Caring for Your Pearl Necklace
The metal of the necklace is water-resistant. The pearl needs more care, because chlorine, salt water, soap, and perfume attack its nacre. So take your necklace off before you shower, bathe, go to the sauna, or work out. Put it on only after your lotion and makeup have soaked in and your hairspray has dried. That way, the pearl keeps its soft luster.
After wearing it, wipe the pearl with a soft, slightly damp cloth and let it dry well. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and high heat damage nacre. Keep the necklace in a dry compartment where no harder jewelry can scratch the pearl. It stays most beautiful when you wear it often.

Cultured Freshwater pearls rarely grow perfectly round. The oval shape is how the pearl grew, and it differs a little from pearl to pearl.
Mother of pearls
The term mother-of-pearl goes back to the Medieval Latin mater perlarum, mother of pearls, the old name for the pearl mussel.

At 45 cm (17.7 in), the cultured freshwater pearl hangs just below the collarbone, which works with almost any neckline. At 40 cm (15.7 in), it sits closer to the neck and looks lovely layered with a second, longer necklace. If you're not sure, wrap a ribbon around your neck and mark the spot where you want the pearl to sit.
It's real: your necklace has a cultured freshwater pearl. It grew inside a mussel and is made of nacre, which is aragonite and a protein called conchiolin. That's why every pearl has its own surface, its own shimmer and a slightly different oval shape. Pearls that look completely identical are almost always imitations made of glass or plastic.
A box chain gets its name from its square links, which look like tiny boxes. Because they fit tightly into each other, the chain lies flat against your neck, hardly twists and feels sturdy even though it is so fine. The cultured freshwater pearl hangs from the chain on a narrow loop and slides to the center on its own as you wear it.
With 14K gold-filled, a thick layer of real gold wraps around the metal core and is firmly bonded to it. Gold-plated jewelry has only a very thin coating that rubs off over time. That's why I use only 14K gold-filled for my gold pieces: your necklace keeps its warm gold tone for many years, even if you wear it every day.
The metal is water-resistant, whether you choose 925 sterling silver or 14K gold-filled. The cultured freshwater pearl, on the other hand, doesn't like chlorine, salt water, soap or perfume. It's best to take the necklace off for showering, swimming and working out. A soft cloth is all you need to care for the pearl, and you should store the necklace dry and away from harder jewelry.
