The pendant of this Sun Necklace is a small sun measuring about 9 x 11 mm. At its center is a face in relief, with closed eyes and a quiet smile, surrounded by pointed rays. The raised areas catch the light while the recesses stay in shadow, which makes the sun look three-dimensional and alive. It comes in 925 sterling silver, an alloy of 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent other metals, usually copper, and in 14K gold-filled. It has no stone, so the whole necklace is water-resistant.
14K gold-filled means that a thick layer of real gold is firmly bonded to a base metal under heat and pressure. Because this gold layer is much thicker than ordinary gold plating, it wears away far more slowly, and its warm tone stays with you for a long time. The sun hangs from a slim bail, and a box chain runs through it. The small square links sit close together, so the chain lies smooth and flat against your neck and hardly twists. I make each of these necklaces by hand in my studio in Oberhausen. You can choose between 45 cm (17.7 in) and 40 cm (15.7 in) for the Sun Necklace.
The sun is one of humanity's oldest symbols. Traditionally, it stands for light, warmth and the joy of life. The Inca worshipped it as the god Inti, and a sun with a face, the Sun of May or Sol de Mayo, still graces the flags of Argentina and Uruguay today.
Your Sun Necklace is water-resistant and can stay on in the shower, during workouts and on vacation. There is no delicate stone to worry about. Over time, chlorine and salt water can make metal look duller, so after swimming, rinse it briefly under clean water and dry it with a soft cloth.
Sterling silver can tarnish over time from contact with air and moisture. A soft silver polishing cloth brings back its shine, and you can clean 14K gold-filled with mild soapy water when needed. Keeping it in its own small pouch stops it from tangling with your other jewelry. That way, your sun will shine for a long time.
A face in relief with closed eyes, framed by pointed rays. Light and shadow give the sun its depth.
The number 925 stands for 92.5 percent pure silver. The rest, usually copper, makes the soft silver strong enough for jewelry.
A sun with a face, the Sol de Mayo, still appears on the flags of Argentina and Uruguay today.

At 45 cm (17.7 in), the sun rests just below the collarbone, a length that works with most necklines. The shorter 40 cm (15.7 in) length brings the sun close to your neck and leaves room for a second, longer necklace below it. If you're unsure, put a piece of string around your neck and measure where you want the sun to sit.
It measures about 9 x 11 mm (0.35 x 0.43 in). It's delicate enough for every day, yet big enough that you can make out its face with its closed eyes. On the fine box chain it looks light and still stands out.
Yes, the sun necklace is water-resistant. Both 925 sterling silver and 14K gold-filled can handle water, and there's no delicate stone. If it has been in chlorinated water or seawater, a rinse with fresh tap water is enough, and once you pat it dry with a soft cloth, it keeps its shine.
Gold-plated jewelry has only a very thin coating of gold that gradually rubs off with everyday wear. With 14K gold-filled, the gold forms a thick, firmly bonded layer over the metal and stays visible for a long time. That's why your sun keeps its warm gold tone, even if you wear it every day.
People have always associated the sun with light, warmth and joy, and it is one of the oldest symbols of humankind. As a gift, a sun necklace says: you bring light into my life. Many people also wear one for themselves, as a small reminder of bright days.
