The Stone: The Cultured Freshwater Pearl, an Organic Gem
A pearl is not a mineral but an organic gem that grows inside a living mussel. It is made of nacre: microscopically thin platelets of aragonite, a form of calcium carbonate. The protein conchiolin binds them together, layer by layer. This structure is exactly what refracts the light and creates the soft glow that seems to come from within. With a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 4.5, the pearl is one of the softest gems of all. The star on this necklace is a genuine cultured freshwater pearl, grown around a nucleus of shell that gives it its shape.
Material and Craftsmanship
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and warm 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The pearl is drilled through and threaded by hand, so the star sits freely on the chain and finds its way back to the center after every movement. It hangs on a fine box chain whose square links interlock closely. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
Meaning of the Pearl
By tradition, the pearl is a symbol of purity and quiet beauty. In old Europe, it was called the tear of the gods. The star, in turn, stands for orientation in many cultures: the fixed point in the sky that you set your course by. Together, the two gave this piece its name: the Stone of Guidance. As a birthstone for June, the pearl also makes a particularly personal gift.
Caring for Your Cultured Pearl Star Necklace
The chain itself is water-resistant, in 925 sterling silver as well as in 14K gold-filled. The star is not: nacre is sensitive to acids and friction. So take the necklace off before showering, swimming, or using the sauna. Perfume, hairspray, and lotion go on your skin first, and your jewelry after.
After wearing, simply wipe the star with a soft, slightly damp cloth and let it dry lying flat. Ultrasonic and steam cleaners are not suitable, because they loosen the layers of nacre. Store the necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, because even household dust is harder than nacre. That way, your pearl keeps its luster for years.

The cultured freshwater pearl is a classic June birthstone and is traditionally associated with the zodiac signs Gemini and Cancer. It is one of the few gems formed by a living organism. It is said to stand for purity, wisdom and quiet beauty, which makes it a personal gift for anyone born in June.
It's grown. For this cultured freshwater pearl, the pearl farmer places a star-shaped nucleus made of shell inside the mussel, and over many months the mussel coats it with nacre, layer by layer. So the surface you see is real nacre that grew there, not a cut or molded shape. That's also why no two stars are alike.
A box chain is made of square links that fit tightly into each other. That's why it lies flat against your neck, barely twists when you wear it and keeps the cultured freshwater pearl neatly centered. Its clean, geometric line makes a lovely contrast to the soft, grown shape of the star.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I offer 14K gold-filled exclusively. Gold-plated jewelry has just a very thin layer of gold that wears off over time and fades more quickly. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker gold layer that is firmly bonded to the core. It isn't quite as cheap as gold plating, but it lasts so long that you won't have to keep buying new necklaces, and you can enjoy its warm gold tone for years.
The chain is water-resistant, but the cultured freshwater pearl is not. Nacre is made of calcium carbonate and is sensitive to acids, so it's best to take the necklace off before showering, swimming or using the sauna. After wearing, wipe the pearl with a soft, slightly damp cloth, skip ultrasonic cleaners and store the necklace dry and on its own.
