Ruby is the red variety of the mineral corundum, chemically aluminum oxide with the formula Al2O3. Its color comes from chromium that is firmly part of the crystal lattice. Only red corundum may be called ruby; every other color goes by the name sapphire. With a Mohs hardness of 9, it is the hardest gem mineral after diamond, which makes it exceptionally scratch-resistant. Corundum crystallizes in the trigonal system and grows in columnar to barrel-shaped crystals. The slim cylinder on this necklace echoes exactly this natural column shape.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and warm 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The ruby measures about 8 to 10 mm (0.3 to 0.4 in), is drilled through, and is threaded by hand directly onto the chain, with no additional setting. The chain itself is a fine box chain whose square links interlock closely. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
In ancient India, ruby was regarded as the king of gems, and rulers wore it as a sign of power and protection. For centuries, people connected its red color with love, courage, and vitality, which is why it is still called the stone of passion today. By tradition, it stands for warmth, willpower, and a clear look ahead. As the birthstone for July, it also makes a particularly personal gift.
The pendant and box chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After contact with seawater or pool water, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Like more than 95 percent of all rubies on the market, the stone on this necklace has been treated. To keep the treatment intact, don't put the stone in an ultrasonic cleaner or a steam bath, and protect it from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Store your necklace separately, because with a Mohs hardness of 9, the stone can scratch softer pieces of jewelry.

Ruby is the official birthstone for July and is traditionally linked to the zodiac sign Cancer. In ancient India it was considered the king of gemstones. By tradition it is said to stand for love, passion and vitality, which makes it a personal gift for anyone born in July.
The stone is a genuine, natural ruby, meaning red corundum with chromium in its crystal lattice, and not a synthetic substitute. It has been treated, like more than 95 percent of all rubies on the market. Treatments like this improve color and clarity, they are standard in the gem trade, and they are permanent. I disclose this openly instead of keeping quiet about it.
A box chain is made of square links that fit tightly together. This lets it lie flat against your neck, barely twist while you wear it and keep the pendant neatly centered. Its clean, geometric line highlights the slim cylinder shape of the ruby.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I work with it exclusively. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It costs a little more than plating, but it keeps its warm tone for years, so you won't have to keep buying new necklaces.
The pendant and box chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 9, ruby is very hard and can scratch softer pieces.

Every stone has a journey and I want that journey to be fair and transparent.
Origin · Ruby
The ruby in this necklace typically comes from the deposits around Montepuez in Mozambique, before each stone is hand-strung in my studio.
