Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl, a beryllium aluminum silicate with the formula Al2Be3[Si6O18]. Its color comes from small traces of chromium and vanadium that take the place of aluminum in the crystal lattice. Beryl crystallizes in the hexagonal system and forms columnar crystals with a hexagonal cross-section, and the cylindrical cut of this pendant follows exactly this natural line. With a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8, the stone is hard, but its fine internal fissures also make it delicate. In the trade, its typical inclusions are called jardin, the garden of the stone.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and warm 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The stone is drilled through and moves freely on a fine chain, so it finds its own center as you wear it. I pick out each stone individually and thread it by hand. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
People were already digging for this stone in the Egyptian mines near Zabara around four thousand years ago, and Cleopatra is still considered its most famous collector. By tradition, its deep green stands for growth, hope, and a clear look ahead. As the birthstone for May, emerald also makes a very personal gift, especially for anyone with a spring birthday.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After swimming in the ocean or a pool, it's best to rinse your emerald necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Like almost every emerald on the market, this stone has been treated with oil. The method has been common since antiquity and fills the fine fissures. So never clean it in an ultrasonic cleaner or a steam bath, and keep it away from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Store the necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry.

Cleopatra had emeralds mined in the Egyptian mines near Zabara. Traditionally, the stone stands for growth, hope and renewal and, as the birthstone of May, is a personal gift.

Emerald is the official birthstone for May and is traditionally linked to the zodiac sign Taurus. Its green has always been associated with spring and new beginnings. By tradition the stone is said to stand for growth, hope and renewal, which makes it a personal gift for anyone born in May.
The stone is a genuine, naturally grown emerald from the beryl family, not a synthetic and not a green-dyed substitute. It has been treated with oil, like more than 95 percent of all cut emeralds on the market. This method has been used since ancient times: it fills the fine fissures and makes the green look calmer and clearer. It has not been dyed, irradiated or heated.
Emerald grows under conditions where fissures and inclusions are almost impossible to avoid. In the trade this pattern is called jardin, the garden of the stone. It isn't a flaw but the best sign that you're looking at a natural stone. Flawless emeralds in this price range are almost always synthetic.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I work with it exclusively. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off and fades over time. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker layer of gold, firmly bonded to the base metal. It costs a little more than plating, but it lasts for years, so you won't have to keep buying new necklaces.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners or steam, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes so the oil filling in the stone stays intact. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 7.5 to 8, emerald is hard, but its inner fissures make it sensitive to knocks.
