Amethyst is the purple variety of the mineral quartz, chemically silicon dioxide. Its color comes from iron in the crystal lattice, which forms color centers under natural radiation. That is why its shade ranges from pale lilac to deep purple. The stone on this necklace is a genuine amethyst whose color has also been enhanced with a process that is common in the gemstone trade, so that it stays even and long-lasting. I'm telling you this openly instead of keeping it quiet. With a Mohs hardness of 7, amethyst is pleasantly durable, and its glassy luster makes the purple come alive even in low light.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled chain. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The amethyst is cut into a slim cylinder with faceted points and drilled lengthwise. It is threaded by hand directly onto the fine box chain, whose square links interlock closely. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
The name goes back to the Greek amethystos, which roughly means "not intoxicated." In antiquity, people believed the purple quartz protected against drunkenness, which is why drinking vessels were made from it. In the Middle Ages, bishops wore it as a sign of temperance. By tradition, it stands for calm, clarity, and an alert mind. As the birthstone for February, it also makes a particularly personal gift.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After contact with seawater or pool water, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Amethyst can fade in long, direct sunlight, so keep the necklace out of the sun when you're not wearing it. You should also avoid high heat, sudden changes in temperature, and ultrasonic and steam cleaners. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, and the purple and the surface will stay beautiful for a long time.

Amethyst is the official birthstone for February and is traditionally linked to the zodiac signs Aquarius and Pisces. In ancient times the purple quartz was already seen as a stone of protection. By tradition it is said to stand for calm, clarity and an alert mind, which makes it a personal gift for anyone born in February.
The stone is genuine amethyst, meaning naturally grown purple quartz, not glass and not a synthetic. Its color has been enhanced with a method that is standard in the gem trade, so it stays even and lasting. This treatment is stable and doesn't wash out. I mention it here on purpose, because many sellers keep quiet about it.
A box chain is made of square links that fit tightly together. This lets it lie flat against your neck, barely twist while you wear it and keep the pendant neatly centered. Its clean, geometric line makes a lovely contrast to the cylindrical shape of the stone.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I only offer 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It costs a little more than plating, but it lasts so long that you won't have to keep buying new necklaces, and you can enjoy its warm gold tone for years.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Store the necklace away from long, direct sunlight, because the purple of amethyst can fade with constant UV exposure.
