Peridot is the gem variety of the mineral olivine, a magnesium iron silicate from the solid solution series between forsterite and fayalite. Its color doesn't come from dye but from iron that sits firmly in the crystal lattice. That's why the stone only comes in shades of green, from light apple green to deep olive green. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, it is moderately hard and does best in a protective setting. An old name for it is chrysolite. It typically has a glassy to slightly oily luster that makes the stone look lively even in low light.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled setting. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The wire is wrapped by hand around each raw stone individually, so the setting follows the shape of your stone. The pendant hangs on a fine chain with closely interlocking square links. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
As early as ancient Egypt, peridot was mined on the island of Zabargad in the Red Sea and revered as the "stone of the sun." For many centuries, the green gemstone was mistaken for other stones. Even some famous supposed emeralds later turned out to be peridots. By tradition, it stands for a zest for life, clarity, and new beginnings. As a birthstone for August, it also makes an especially personal gift.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, though, you should avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After contact with ocean or pool water, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Peridot shouldn't be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner or with steam, and it needs protection from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, because peridot can be sensitive to scratches and hard knocks. This way, the bright green of the stone and the surface of your necklace will stay beautiful for a long time.

Peridot is the official birthstone for August and is traditionally linked to the zodiac sign Leo. In ancient Egypt it was already known as the gem of the sun. By tradition it is said to stand for zest for life, clarity and new beginnings, which makes it a personal gift for anyone born in August.
Peridot is one of the few gemstones that are practically never treated. Its color is idiochromatic: it comes from iron that is firmly built into the crystal lattice, and it can't be changed by heating, irradiation or dyeing. What you see is the natural color of the stone.
The chain is made of fine, square links that fit tightly into each other. This lets it lie flat against your neck, barely twist while you wear it and keep the pendant neatly centered. Its clean, geometric line makes a lovely contrast to the natural shape of the raw stone. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why I only offer 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top, which wears off over time and fades faster. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, has a much thicker, firmly bonded layer of gold. It costs a little more than plating, but it lasts so long that you won't have to keep buying new necklaces, and you can enjoy its warm gold tone for years.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, peridot is only moderately hard and is sensitive to hard knocks.

The peridot in this necklace typically comes from the deposits of Kohistan in Pakistan, before each raw stone is set by hand in my studio.
