Malachite is a basic copper carbonate with the formula Cu2CO3(OH)2 and belongs to the carbonate class of minerals. It forms as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of copper deposits, in other words where copper-bearing rock weathers. Its color comes from the copper itself, which makes up about 57 percent of the mineral. That's why it only comes in shades of green. Its light and dark bands are characteristic; they form as it grows in concentric layers and give every stone its own pattern. With a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4, it is one of the softer stones and is opaque to slightly translucent.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled chain. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The malachite is a genuine natural stone, cut into a teardrop and treated to protect its soft surface. It is threaded by hand onto the fine box chain, whose square links interlock closely. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
Its name goes back to the Greek word malache, meaning mallow, a plant whose green leaves recall the color of the stone. In ancient Egypt, malachite was made into amulets and ground into pigment that was used as green eye makeup. In Russia in the 19th century, entire halls were clad in it, for example in the Winter Palace in Saint Petersburg. By tradition, the stone stands for transformation, growth, and protection.
The chain in 925 sterling silver or 14K gold-filled is water-resistant. The stone is not water-resistant to the same degree, because it is soft and sensitive to acids, sweat, and prolonged contact with water. So take your piece off before showering, bathing, or swimming, and put it on only after your perfume and lotion have soaked in.
Clean the stone only with a dry cloth or a soft, slightly damp one, and dry it right away afterward. Ultrasonic cleaning, steam, and cleaners containing acid or ammonia are not suitable for malachite. Long periods of direct sunlight can fade its color. Store your malachite necklace in a dry, dark place, apart from harder pieces of jewelry. This way, the polish will stay beautiful for a long time.
Malachite contains around 57 percent copper and its Mohs hardness is 3.5 to 4.
The light and dark rings are created during cup-shaped growth and make each pattern unique.
Malachite only occurs in shades of green because the color comes from the copper in the mineral itself.
In Ancient Egypt, malachite was made into amulets and ground as a pigment; its green color represented life and growth. It is traditionally considered a stone of transformation and protection.

The name malachite goes back to the Greek word malache, meaning mallow, a plant whose green leaves resemble the color of the stone. In ancient Egypt it was made into amulets and ground into green pigment. By tradition malachite is said to stand for transformation, growth and protection.
The stone is genuine malachite, not a dyed substitute and not reconstituted material pressed from stone powder. It is treated: with a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4, malachite is soft and porous, so the surface is stabilized to preserve the polish and the pattern. This is common for malachite in jewelry, and it is disclosed openly here.
A box chain is made of square links that fit tightly together. This lets it lie flat against your neck, barely twist while you wear it and keep the teardrop neatly centered. Its clean, geometric line gives a calm frame to the lively banding of the stone.
14K gold-filled lasts much longer, which is why I only carry 14K gold-filled. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top of the base metal, which rubs off and fades faster. 14K gold-filled has a thick gold layer that is mechanically bonded: it costs a little more up front, but the necklace stays with you for years instead of a single season.
The chain, in 925 sterling silver or 14K gold-filled, is water-resistant. The malachite itself is not water-resistant to the same degree, so take the necklace off before showering, bathing or swimming. Avoid perfume, acids, ultrasonic cleaners and steam. Clean the stone only with a soft cloth, and store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry.

Origin of the stones
Every stone has a journey and I want that journey to be fair and transparent.
Origin · Malachite
The malachite in this necklace typically comes from the Katanga copper belt in the Democratic Republic of Congo, before each drop is grown in my studio.
