The Cultured Freshwater Pearl: Nacre from a Mussel
A pearl is not a mineral in the strict sense but an organic gem made of nacre. Nacre consists of fine platelets of the mineral aragonite, a crystal form of calcium carbonate. The protein conchiolin holds these platelets together, layer by layer. This layering is exactly what refracts the light and creates the soft luster and the delicate play of color in pink and blue. With a Mohs hardness of 2.5 to 4.5, nacre is one of the softer jewelry materials and likes gentle handling. The heart shape grew inside the mussel, so no two hearts are exactly alike.
Material and Craftsmanship
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and a warm 14K gold-filled chain. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The pearl is drilled through and glides directly on the fine chain, whose square links interlock closely. It needs no setting, sits freely in the center, and settles into place on its own as you wear it. Each heart is threaded individually by hand. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
Meaning of the Pearl
Pearls have been part of human life for thousands of years. In the ancient East, they were thought to be tears from heaven. By tradition, they stand for purity, calm, and connection. Caring for Your Cultured Pearl Heart Necklace
The chain itself is water-resistant. The pearl is not, because nacre is sensitive to chlorine, salt water, soap, and perfume. So take the necklace off before showering, swimming, using the sauna, or working out, and put it on only once your lotion, makeup, and hairspray have settled. That way, the pearl keeps the luster its nacre built up over the years.
After wearing, wipe the heart with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it carefully. Ultrasonic cleaners, steam, and high heat are not for nacre. Store your necklace in a dry, airy place, away from harder jewelry, so the soft surface doesn't get scratched. Wearing it regularly keeps the luster alive.

Like moonstone and alexandrite, the cultured freshwater pearl is one of the official June birthstones. It is said to stand for purity, calm and connection. Because it comes from the water, it is traditionally associated with the water signs, especially Cancer. That makes it a personal gift for anyone born in June.
It's a real cultured freshwater pearl, not a faux pearl. It is made entirely of nacre grown by a mussel, which is aragonite and a protein called conchiolin. That's why every heart has its own surface, its own play of color and a slightly different shape. Perfectly identical pearls are almost always imitations made of plastic or glass.
The cultured freshwater pearl is drilled and slides directly onto the chain, with no setting and no bail. It hangs on a fine box chain with square links that fit tightly into each other. That way the chain lies flat against your neck, barely twists when you wear it and keeps the heart neatly centered.
14K gold-filled is the higher-quality choice, and that's exactly why it's the only one I work with. Gold-plated jewelry has just a very thin layer of gold on the base metal, which wears off and fades more quickly. 14K gold-filled has a much thicker gold layer that is firmly bonded to the core. It costs a little more than gold plating, but it lasts so long that you keep the same warm gold tone for years.
