The Cultured Pearl: Grown, Not Imitated
A cultured pearl is an organic jewel that a mussel builds from nacre. This nacre is made of the protein conchiolin and aragonite, a crystal form of calcium carbonate. Imitations, on the other hand, are coated glass or coated plastic and often look uniform and smooth like lacquer. These pearl hoop earrings hold cultured freshwater pearls with an elongated oval shape. Each one has a slightly different silhouette and its own soft shimmer. With a hardness of only 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale, nacre is rather soft, so it's worth treating it with care.
Material and Craftsmanship
You can get these delicate hoops in 925 sterling silver or in 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled means that real gold is permanently bonded to a base metal in a thick layer. This gold layer keeps its warm shine for years, while simple gold plating wears off faster. Each pearl gets a fine headpin, and I shape its end by hand into a small loop. With this loop, it hangs freely from the hoop and moves with every turn of your head. The hoops themselves are kept simple and slim, so the pearl takes center stage. The pearl hoop earrings are only available as a pair.
Meaning of the Pearl
Even in ancient times, pearls were a sign of value and dignity, and by tradition they stand for purity and loyalty. The circle of a hoop has always stood for a bond with no beginning and no end. For a June birthday, pearl hoop earrings make a personal gift, because the pearl is a birthstone for that month.
Caring for Your Pearl Hoop Earrings
The hoops are water-resistant, but the pearls need a little protection. Shampoo, hairspray, and perfume harm nacre, and so do chlorine and salt water. So take the hoops out to shower, swim, or work out. Put them in only after your hairspray and perfume have dried.
A soft, slightly damp cloth is all you need for cleaning, and afterward the pearls should dry well. Keep them away from ultrasonic baths, steam, and high heat. Store the hoops so they don't rub against harder jewelry. Then the pearls keep their smooth surface and their luster.
