The Stone: Rock Crystal from the Quartz Family
Rock crystal is the colorless, clear variety of the mineral quartz, chemically silicon dioxide, which grows in the trigonal crystal system. Unlike the colored quartzes, it lacks the trace elements that create color, so the stone stays as clear as water. With a Mohs hardness of 7, it is durable enough for everyday wear. Its name goes back to the Greek word krystallos, meaning ice, because people long believed it was permanently frozen water. The cylinder on this necklace is a genuine rock crystal that has been cut and treated, shaped to a point at both ends, and drilled crosswise. Its glassy luster is typical and lights up even in low light.
Material and Craftsmanship
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and warm 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The rock crystal is drilled crosswise and threaded onto the chain by hand, so it sits in the center and can move freely. It hangs on a fine box chain whose square links interlock closely. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
Meaning of the Stone
The ancient Greeks thought the clear quartz was eternal ice that never thaws, and that is how it got its name. The Romans carved seals and vessels from it, and in the Middle Ages, scholars saw it as a stone of wisdom. By tradition, it still stands for clarity, purity, and a fresh start. Along with diamond, it is considered a birthstone for April, which makes it a particularly personal gift.
Caring for Your Rock Crystal Necklace
The pendant and box chain of your rock crystal necklace are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make it last as long as possible, though, avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After contact with seawater or pool water, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Because the stone has been treated, it doesn't belong in an ultrasonic cleaner or a steam bath, and it should be protected from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, because the cut edges and points are sensitive to hard knocks. That way, your rock crystal stays clear for a long time.

Traditionally, clear quartz stands for clarity, purity and a fresh beginning. This makes the rock crystal necklace a personal gift for anyone whose birthday is in April.
The stone is a real rock crystal, i.e. the colorless variety of the mineral quartz, and not glass. It is sanded and treated. I'm stating this openly here instead of hiding it. Each cylinder is individually inspected for clarity and clean edges before mounting.
A box chain, or Venetian chain in German, consists of square links that interlock tightly. This means it lies smoothly on the neck, hardly rotates when worn and keeps the cylinder neatly in the middle. Its straight, geometric line takes up the polished edges of the stone.
14K gold filled is the higher quality choice and that is why I only work with it. With gold-plated jewelry, there is only a very thin layer of gold on the metal base, which rubs off and becomes pale after a few months. 14K gold-filled has a significantly thicker, tightly bound gold layer: a little more expensive to purchase, but so durable that you don't have to constantly buy new chains.
Pendant and Box Chain are water-resistant. However, avoid long-term contact with perfume, creams and aggressive cleaners and avoid ultrasonic and steam baths because the stone has been treated. Store the necklace dry and individually because the rock crystal has a Mohs hardness of 7 and the ground tips are sensitive to hard impacts.
