Carnelian is the orange-red to reddish-brown variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz, chemically silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Its color comes from finely dispersed iron compounds: iron oxide colors the stone red, while iron hydroxide gives it a brownish look. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, it is durable enough for everyday wear, and when polished, it shows a waxy to glassy luster. This stone is cut as a cylinder with narrow side facets and beveled ends. Its color zones flow into one another, from a strong orange-red to a light, almost milky tone.
You can choose between 925 sterling silver and warm 14K gold-filled. 14K gold-filled is a real, thick layer of gold that is firmly bonded to a base metal. Unlike simple gold plating, which is applied only wafer-thin, wears off over time, and fades fairly quickly, 14K gold-filled keeps its warm gold tone for years. The cylinder is drilled through and sits directly on the fine chain, whose square links interlock closely. That way, the stone can move and keeps finding its way back to the center as you wear it. You choose the length when you order: 45 cm (17.7 in) or 40 cm (15.7 in).
In ancient Egypt, carnelian was linked to the sun god Ra, and finds from the tomb of Tutankhamun show how highly the stone was valued at the time. Roman officers wore it as a seal stone in their rings. By tradition, it stands for a zest for life, courage, and drive. As a gemstone, carnelian has been part of people's lives for more than five thousand years.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant and suitable for everyday wear. To make your necklace last as long as possible, avoid prolonged contact with salt water and chlorinated water, as well as perfume, lotions, and harsh cleaning products. After swimming in the ocean or a pool, it's best to rinse the necklace with clean water and dry it carefully.
Carnelian should not be cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaner or with steam, and it should be protected from high heat and sudden changes in temperature. Constant direct sunlight can also affect the color of treated chalcedony over time. Store your necklace dry and apart from harder pieces of jewelry, and the warm orange-red and the surface will stay beautiful for a long time.

Iron oxide turns the stone red, iron hydroxide makes it appear brownish.
Egyptians, Etruscans and Romans used heat to deepen the color of carnelian.

In ancient Egypt, carnelian was associated with the sun god Ra and was placed in tombs as an amulet, including the tomb of Tutankhamun. Roman officers wore it as a seal stone. By tradition it is said to stand for zest for life, courage and drive. This is traditional symbolism, not a claim about any effect.
The stone is genuine carnelian, a natural variety of chalcedony, and its color has been treated. I say this openly because it has been common practice with carnelian since ancient times: the Egyptians, Etruscans and Romans already deepened its color with heat. In the process, brownish iron hydroxide permanently turns into red iron oxide. So the color is in the stone itself, not in a coating.
40 cm (15.7 in) sits higher on the neck and highlights the collarbone. 45 cm (17.7 in) is the classic length and falls softly onto the neckline. If you're not sure, go with 45 cm. It works well for most people, and the cylinder rests freely on the skin.
14K gold-filled is by far the longer-lasting choice, which is why I work with it exclusively. Gold-plated jewelry has just a wafer-thin layer of gold on top of the base metal. It rubs off and fades over time. 14K gold-filled, on the other hand, comes with a much thicker layer of gold that is firmly bonded to the core. It costs a little more than plating, but you won't have to buy a new necklace every few months, and you keep the warm gold tone for years.
The pendant and chain are water-resistant. Still, avoid prolonged contact with perfume, lotions and harsh cleaners, don't use ultrasonic cleaners, and keep it away from high heat and sudden temperature changes. Constant direct sunlight can also affect the color of treated chalcedony over time. Store the necklace dry and separate from other jewelry, because with a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, carnelian is sturdy but not scratch-proof.

Origin of the stones
Every stone has a journey and I want that journey to be fair and transparent.
Origin · Carnelian
The carnelian in this necklace typically comes from the deposits of Gujarat in India, before each stone is hand-strung onto the necklace in my studio.
