The suns are made entirely of metal: 925 sterling silver with 92.5 percent pure silver, or 14K gold-filled with a thick layer of real gold. Since there is no stone in them, the earrings are water-resistant and sturdy enough for every day, from the office to the beach.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003ch2\u003eMaterial and Craftsmanship\u003c\/h2\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe ear hooks always match the color you choose: 925 sterling silver for the silver suns, 14K gold-filled for the gold ones. The gold on 14K gold-filled is not a paper-thin coating but a thick, firmly bonded layer. It wears off much more slowly than simple gold plating and keeps its color for years. A small coil decorates each ear hook, and below it the sun hangs from a fine jump ring. The ear hooks are delicately curved and easy to put in, and clear earring backs keep them securely in place. The earrings are made in my studio in Oberhausen, where I assemble every pair by hand and check every sun. Over time, though, shampoo, hairspray and perfume leave a dull film on metal. So put them in once your styling is done, and wipe them clean now and then with a soft, damp cloth. Clean the ear hooks at the same time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eSilver tarnishes over time. This is a natural process, not a defect. A silver polishing cloth brings back the shine; for gold suns a soft cloth is usually enough. Store the earrings as a pair with the backs on, ideally in a small pouch.
